SEIU invites you & yours to a presentation on Tax Fairness in Illinois:
Wednesday May 23, 7-9pm
University YMCA, 1001 S. Wright St., Champaign IL 61820
Why can’t our State pay its bills?
Our public employees’ pensions are in trouble because the State didn’t pay its fair share, right? But why didn’t they pay? They used the money to pay for other budget items — why?
Because our state income tax structure is one of the most regressive in the nation, unfairly burdening the lower income taxpayers while the rich get away without paying their fair share.
But Illinoisans pay a flat tax, right? WRONG! The wealthiest individuals in our state pay half (or less) of the rate the rest of us pay.
But people in Illinois like it that way, right? WRONG! Polls show Illinoisans favor a fair tax system that requires the rich to pay more.
But that’s just how it is in the Midwest, right? WRONG! Most surrounding states actually do not have a so-called “flat” tax.
Even Mississippi, which is pretty regressive (and I can say that because I’m from Mississippi), has three tax rates: 3% for the lower income group, 4% for the middle, and 5% for the wealthy.
The good news is, there is a way out. Come and hear about it. Please pass the word to members and allies. This event is free and open to the public.
