Student Solidarity Mutual Aid Fund

Update: The CFA has made the difficult decision to pause new applications to the fund while we secure additional sources of funding. An announcement will be made when the fund reopens to students. In order for us to reopen the fund, your support and donations are crucial.

Fund Description

As part of our efforts to support our students across campus, the Campus Faculty Association (CFA) has established a Student Solidarity Mutual Aid Fund. Any undergraduate UIUC student can request support from this fund for any financial need.

We believe these efforts are essential as we move into another semester in which the COVID-19 pandemic and economic fallout continue to massively disrupt our students’ lives. As faculty, we know our students cannot learn if they cannot make ends meet. We also recognize these conditions are structural, not individual.

We cannot do this work alone. While CFA organizes and provides seed money to launch this mutual aid fund, we ask our colleagues and friends with sufficient means to donate what they can. Widespread donations will ensure that our students know we support them in these extraordinary times.

How to Apply

Any undergraduate studying at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign can apply for funds below. As a mutual aid project, we reject harmful practices of deciding who is “worthy” or “unworthy” of having their needs met. We do not have eligibility requirements. We do not need you to justify your request for funds. We do not expect you to “pay forward” your support. We respect your privacy.

Individuals can apply for funds at a cap of $100. Should the monetary amount of requests exceed the funds we have available in the fund, we will do a blanket percentage reduction. For example, if 30 people each requested $100 and we only had $1500 available, each person would receive 50% of the amount requested ($50). Individuals are welcome to reapply for funds, but first-time applicants will be given priority if funds are limited. Funds will be dispersed on a bi-weekly basis. Funds can be disbursed through Paypal. If you do not have access to Paypal, we can work with you.

The next fund distribution will take place on: February 8, 2021.

We recognize that some kinds of financial need cannot be resolved on a one-time basis. Because we have limited funds and we want to make support available to as many students as possible, we have chosen for now to go with this model. We will work to support ongoing needs as well. (See GEO’s mutual aid resource list for additional sources of support.) That being said, if you have an ongoing need that can be helped by this fund, don’t hesitate to apply, and don’t hesitate to talk to us! Let us know what you need, we are here to help.
