My strong support of faculty unions comes from my belief that we should provide the best quality higher education to the broadest range of students. A strong and effective faculty is the key to doing this. Students benefit when their teachers are invested in student development and active in research. We can retain quality faculty by creating work environments that promote equitable practices and a sense of job security. Faculty unions help to achieve these goals by protecting tenure, ensuring that promotion and salary policies are fair, and making sure faculty have a voice in governance. In turn, they help build quality and comprehensive teaching-learning environments for students across class and racial backgrounds.
