Decent working conditions should not be a privilege given only to a select few. As universities are coming under increasing financial pressure and facing global competition, it is even more important to protect all workers’ rights. Non-tenure-track faculty still need to fight for basic rights like acceptable wages, reasonable workloads, longer-term contracts, and a voice in university governance. For all faculty, unionization not only helps create better working conditions but also protects and nurtures universities as places for learning, free speech, and creative research that are open and welcoming to all.
