Dear Alma: Reliable Sources?

Dear Alma,

I’m trying to make up my mind about whether to support a tenure-track faculty union at UIUC . Recently, I read an anti-union essay written by a faculty member who cited information from the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ). Surely this is some reputable outfit that would only publish sane, well-researched arguments?

Cred Yullus

Dear Professor Yullus,

Sadly, the ACLJ is not a source you should encourage students to cite in their essays. It was started by Reverend Pat “Blood Diamonds” Robertson. It carries headlines like “The IRS surrenders to Angry Atheists,” and sponsors petitions such as “terrorist traitors must not reenter us.” I suppose it’s no surprise that right-wing fundamentalists don’t support union rights. But a reliable source, with well researched information?  Not so much.

Love, Alma
