Dear Colleagues,
As you know, UIUC faces an unprecedented crisis of academic freedom and shared governance. At the same time, our non-tenure-track colleagues are facing frozen wages and an unwillingness to bargain, while clerical staff on campus are battling the destruction of their collective bargaining agreement. Clearly, the Board of Trustees and Chancellor Wise are out of touch with UIUC faculty and staff.
Together, we can fight back. On Thursday, September 11, CFA will be joining a unity rally with other campus labor unions, students and justice groups. We will converge on the Alma Mater to rally in unity for respect and academic freedom, to show we have power in numbers, and to demand that our voices are heard.
Please join us this Thursday at 12:00 noon at the Alma Mater.
We will address a Chancellor who is willing to violate the University’s statutes and a Board of Trustees that does not understand academic freedom or shared governance. We are pushing back against an administration that has arbitrarily frozen non-tenure-track faculty raises and refuses to bargain. We will resist the administration’s unilateral decisions to gut staff unions, punish non-tenure-track faculty, and stifle academic freedom in the name of civility.
But we can’t stop there. On September 12th, what will happen? CFA is committed to organizing towards the only sustainable solution to UIUC’s systemic issues—collective bargaining rights for all faculty. Stay posted for updates on our continued efforts to change UIUC for the better, for everyone: students, faculty and staff.
